SUDANESE JOURNALIST MAKES HARROWING TREK TO KENYA
By Paul Ndiho
Sudan has been rocked by violence since April 15, when tensions between the military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces burst into open fighting. The conflict has killed more than 3,000 people, and uncounted Sudanese have fled to neighboring countries to escape the ongoing fighting; among those people is a Sudanese Journalist, Shakoor Nyaketo. Who fled his native country accompanied by his seven-month-pregnant wife, hoping to find a haven for himself and his family. Shakoor, alongside other Sudanese, walked for several days, covering hundreds of kilometers from the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, through the dangerous roads of Ethiopia, and finally made it to Nairobi, Kenya. His story is that of triumph and overcoming adversity. VOA’s Paul Ndiho spoke to Shakoor Nyaketo, who shared his ordeal.
