CLASHES IN ETHIOPIA’S AMHARA REGION
By Paul Ndiho
Fighting has continued in Ethiopia’s Amhara region, specifically in Gondar, between the government and local militias known as the Fano. The clashes have been intense, with the government claiming to have killed over 50 militia members. The Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF), in a statement released on a verified Facebook account, confirmed the clashes, adding that government security forces thwarted militia attacks. Reports suggest that fighting has also occurred in other parts of the region, and some militias claim to have gained control of certain areas and captured soldiers. For more insight about FANO militias and the clashes in Ethiopia’s Amahara, VOA’s Paul Ndiho, via Skype, spoke with Yoseph Hailey, an Ethiopian activist based in Washington, DC.
