Zambia Celebrates 60 Years of Independence
On October 24, 1964, Zambia gained independence from British rule and supported other African liberation movements. Zambia’s founding President, Kenneth Kaunda, played a significant role in helping other African nations’ fights for freedom, such as South Africa’s African National Congress ANC and the Southwest Africa People’s Organization SWAPO, which fought for Namibia’s Independence and other African nations.
