DEVASTATING FLOODS CAUSE OVER 5,000 DEATHS IN LIBYA

The death toll from flooding that hit the eastern Libyan city of Derna reached more than 5,000 and was expected to rise further, a local health official said on Wednesday, as authorities struggled to get aid to the coastal city where thousands remained missing, and tens of thousands were homeless. Mediterranean storm Daniel caused deadly flooding in many towns of eastern Libya, but the worst hit was Derna. Each year, ASRF recognizes individuals who have significantly contributed to covering African affairs and showcasing its diverse voices. In its latest edition, ASRF had the honor of presenting its prestigious award to Shaka Ssali, a veteran journalist from Voice of America (VOA). Onijah Zani, a self-taught professional roller skater from Lusaka, Zambia, is making waves in the roller skating world. Despite the challenges of skating in the city streets, he is using innovative technology to bring this sport to life. Onijah’s skills have made him an internet star, and he has represented Zambia in international competitions. He uses his expertise to train other roller skaters in Zambia and beyond. MORE THAN 10,000 MISSING IN LIBYAN FLOODS

Thousands are feared dead or missing in Libya after massive flash floods devastated eastern regions, with a surge of muddy river water ripping away entire neighborhoods in one coastal city, local authorities and international aid groups said Tuesday. Massive destruction can be seen in images published online from the port city of Derna, home to 100,000 people, where multi-story buildings on the river banks collapsed, and houses vanished in the raging waters after two upstream dams broke. DEATH TOLL FROM QUAKE NEARLY 2,500

Rescuers on Monday searched villages reduced to rubble for survivors in a desperate race against time as the death toll rose to almost 2,500 and the scale of destruction became more apparent. The United Nations estimates that 300,000 people were affected by the magnitude 6.8 quake, made more dangerous by its relatively shallow depth. U S SANCTIONS SUDAN’S HIGH-RANKING RSF LEADER

ZIMBABWE’S EMERSON MNANGAGWA SWORN IN FOR SECOND TERM
