The need to connect Rwandans to the social media giant Wikipedia has led a movement of young people dubbed Wikimedia Community Rwanda to empower individuals to contribute to the website in their native language, Kinyarwanda.
Wikimedia Rwanda is an independent team of self-motivated individuals that aims to improve articles on Wikimedia Foundation project websites and promote free and Open knowledge locally in Kinyarwanda. To learn more, I spoke with Ndahiro Derrick, AKA Alter, a Wikipedia team lead in Kigali, Rwanda, about this initiative.

Delegates at COP28, a UN climate conference in Dubai, have approved a fund to assist developing nations in dealing with the damaging effects of climate change. This fund aims to aid countries, particularly in Africa, disproportionately affected by climate-related disasters such as floods, droughts, and rising sea levels. Despite being a widely accessed and essential source of knowledge, Wikipedia needs more content in African languages. For instance, some significant languages commonly spoken in Africa have fewer articles, unlike the top-ranked English Wikipedia, which has millions of pieces. To address this discrepancy, a movement led by young Wiki’s or techies in Ghana aims to empower individuals to contribute to Wikipedia in their native languages, allowing volunteers to create and edit numerous Wikipedia articles in African languages. Earlier, I caught up with Joris Darlington Quarshie, a Wikipedia team lead, who was on a jog on one of the hottest days in Accra, Ghana.

Uganda’s new License Plate Tracking surveillance system has raised concerns about privacy rights and freedom of association and expression, according to a report by Human Rights Watch. The system allows the government to track the locations of all registered vehicles in real-time, including foreign cars temporarily in the country. Human Rights Watch urges the government to scrap the system, as it risks individual rights. Additionally, vehicle owners must pay a registration fee to obtain new plates with tracking devices provided by Uganda Telecommunications Corporation Ltd. Kenya’s parliament has given its support to deploy 1,000 police officers to Haiti to help combat gang violence. This decision comes despite a court order temporarily putting the deployment on hold. The MPs who approved the motion cited Kenya’s responsibility to assist other countries in need.
