However, Dr. Dieng warns against this approach, especially in regions prone to conflict where misinformation can have dire consequences.”In certain areas, the spread of misinformation can quickly spiral into ethnic conflict and other types of violence. We cannot afford to run natural experiments and address the fallout later. The potential for AI to create realistic but false information makes preemptive regulation essential.”
