ZAMBIA’S TREASON CYCLE: SAME CHARGE, DIFFERENT PRESIDENT
In 2017, Hakainde Hichilema was Zambia’s opposition leader when the late President Edgar Lungu’s government arrested him and charged him with treason. Nine years later, Hichilema is president, and opposition leader Brian Mundubile is facing a similar ordeal following Zambia’s disputed election.
Mundubile said armed security personnel raided his residence before his arrest. The circumstances may differ, but the political parallels are striking. Same country. Same charge. Different president.
