PUSHING STEM EDUCATION IN GHANA

Despite improvements in Ghana’s education system, STEM education faces challenges such as a need for more resources, materials, and equipment and insufficient training for STEM teachers. Ghana Stem Network, an organization that brings together young, like-minded people across Ghana, is working hard to address some of these challenges. I spoke to Joshua Agyemang, president of Ghana Stem Network in the Ghanaian capital, Accra.

CHINA TRAINING AFRICAN MILITARY OFFICERS

A new study released last month by the Africa Center for Strategic Studies says China trains nearly 2,000 African military officers annually at military and political academies. An additional 500 African officers were attending the PLA Naval Medical University.

The study says China envisages professional military education in Africa as an opportunity to promote China’s governance model while deepening ties to Africa’s ruling political parties.

REGULATING AI FOR HEALTH

The Global Initiative on AI for Health, along with other stakeholders, is looking at regulating artificial intelligence (AI) for Health. The Initiative emphasizes the importance of establishing AI systems’ safety and effectiveness and fostering dialogue among stakeholders, including developers, regulators, manufacturers, health workers, and patients. Analysts say AI plays a significant role in diagnosis, clinical care, drug and development, and disease surveillance and could be beneficial in settings lacking medical specialists in interpreting retinal scans and radiology images. DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO’S UPCOMING ELECTIONS

Earlier this month, the CENI election commission, the body responsible for organizing elections in the DRC, announced that twenty-four candidates, including the incumbent Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi, have officially submitted their applications for the upcoming presidential election in December. The pool of candidates is diverse, comprising old rivals, first-time contenders, and previously marginalized presidential hopefuls raising concerns that the opposition vote may be divided, consequently boosting Tshisekedi’s chances of securing a second term.
